An Important Change in Perception
So here’s what I’ve been up to lately: flexing my “patience” muscle. Ask anyone in my immediate family and they’ll tell you that patience (in my personal life) has never been one of my greatest strengths. So I’ve decided to devote this summer, and forever after, to getting my patience muscle in tip top shape.
What this means is that I am actively and consciously training myself to breathe through the discomfort of not having things happen precisely when I want them to, and actually appreciating the time it takes for things that matter to germinate and really take root. Just thinking about things in this way allows me to take my foot off the gas so I can enjoy the ride in a more meaningful way. I know that I will be even more grateful in the long run for those things that take a little longer to happen.
Part of my “training” includes making more room in my head, heart and life for the things I long for. I need to make sure I haven’t left any obstacles in the way and I’m ready to receive all that is attached to what I want.
The other part of my training involves using the waiting time to effectively address other priorities in my life. There are always other things I can turn my attention to, with equally great rewards, while I’m waiting for something in another arena to take shape. This doesn’t mean I’ve abandoned my original aim. I will “water it” every day but I won’t obsess. I will find other important options to fill my time so I am happy and fulfilled until my primary plan/goal/desire is ready to emerge.
So, for me, waiting isn’t just waiting any longer. I’m building my power in patience.
I’ve made a change in how I perceive waiting and it’s really reframed the experience for me. How have you recently made a change that has made a positive impact in your life?
