In the Interest of Time..

It’s an epidemic!  Have you noticed that people don’t honor your time?  They tell you they’ll meet you at 9 and show up at 9:15 or not at all.  You make an appointment at 5 and don’t get seen until 5:30.  What’s worse is that we often don’t respect our OWN time.

  • Are you late to your appointments?
  • Do you neglect to budget enough time to complete tasks and are therefore always rushing, frazzled and feeling overwhelmed?
  • Do you procrastinate and waste time?

Don’t you deserve better?

I posted on 9/11 about how I was reminded to cherish and make every moment count.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I waste time too, and I’m not always as prompt as I’d like to be, but I’ve pledged to do better.  Every time I find myself rushing and racing, I know I’ve shortchanged myself.  I’ve dishonored my time and the time of others as well.

When I plan appropriately and show up when I’m supposed to, I feel more at ease, more in control, and I know I’ve demonstrated respect for those I’m meeting.  I feel good about the fact that I haven’t inconvenienced someone else, or abused his or her time.

Promptness is more important than we realize.  It illustrates the importance (or lack of importance) that we attribute to the people or things in our lives.

Do you honor yourself by honoring your time?

Would it feel better to do so, rather than make false excuses for being late and find yourself apologizing repeatedly?

Aren’t YOU worth the full value that each moment has to offer, and aren’t those you interact with?

What will you do to better honor your time, and yourself, going forward?

Warmly, Laurie

What’s In Your Way?

I bet there are things or circumstances that you want for yourself that will improve your quality of life.  What separates you from them?

Can you identify the obstacles without blaming others or naming excuses?  If you can’t, then you attribute what you don’t have to that which is beyond your control, implying that you’ll never have what you want.

Now try looking at those hurdles more objectively.  Are there actually things that are within your control, things that you might be able to change?  Try to locate your power within you.

Sometimes FEAR is what holds us back.  Fear of the unknown, fear of the next step, fear of success because expectations might be higher thereafter.  Think about the possibilities that might exist if you were to face the fear.  Imagine what that experience might feel like!

How would you rate your level of commitment to getting what you want?  Are you willing to put forth the effort necessary to achieve your goals?  Remember that it’s best to approach things in bite size pieces.  Your commitment and motivation may falter if you bite off more than you can chew.

Do your obstacles include the messages you tell yourself?  By this, I mean things like “who do you think you are?!” or “you couldn’t possibly achieve that!”  Take a look at your inner dialogue and see if you can replace some of those self-defeating messages with more encouraging ones like “I deserve this as much as anybody” or “I will be proud of myself for trying, regardless of the end result.”  Often, WE are the ones standing in our own way.

Identifying your obstacles will help you develop the necessary strategies for surpassing them.  Be realistic and honest with yourself and figure out what YOU can do to overcome the hurdles that keep you stuck.  Find the strength within you to move yourself forward.  If you’re waiting for the perfect time, that time may never come.  How can you play a pivotal role in moving the mountains that stand before you?  Or what can you do to get around them?

If you’re interested in learning more about how to overcome obstacles and become unstuck, click here.  Simply naming our challenges can strip them of their power over us and decrease the feeling of overwhelm that many of us feel.  I wish you much success in moving past YOUR obstacles!

Warmly,  Laurie

What Do You Want?

Really, what is it you want for yourself?  Imagine it in the greatest detail possible.  You can’t get somewhere if you aren’t sure of the destination.  Where do you want to go and how is it different from where you are now?  How will that DIFFERENCE impact you?  Think about what your life will be like if you don’t seek out what you desire.

Keep the image of what you’re aiming for close at hand.

The hard truth:  focusing on what isn’t working now and why it’s so awful will only cause you to remain stuck and feel victimized.  What you focus on looms larger in your mind, so expend that very same energy imagining your ideal and the steps to get there.  Focus on what you can begin to do to move in your “right” direction.

Another hard truth:  unfortunately you can’t wish things into existence.  Real effort is required.  However, being clear about what you want is one of the first important steps toward obtaining it.

Are you ready to ask for what you want?  Practice stating it by responding to this blog post…I’m eager to hear about what YOU want to make happen in your life.

Held Captive by Clutter?

Is the space you occupy a mess?  If your answer to this question is YES, then chances are you’re feeling overwhelmed as well.  What is often the case is that our minds mirror our physical surroundings and vice versa.  The physical clutter serves as an important signal to you to tune in to what’s really going on.

It might be that you’ve just gotten behind with some tasks and that’s okay.  The key is making sure you set aside some time to catch up and clean up so that you break the cycle of collecting clutter.  Or, the accumulation of “stuff” might represent all that’s going on in your life and the need to make more appropriate choices or alter your coping strategies.  Or, the “stuff” is serving as insulation, “protecting” you from what you fear, but possibly also from what you really want!

Clutter weighs us down.  It causes us to waste time and be less efficient.  It affects our mood (clutter makes me cranky!).

When I clear the physical clutter in my living and work spaces, it enables me to breathe more freely and provides a more fertile ground for creativity.  I think more clearly and have a greater capacity to problem-solve.  If I’ve been feeling bogged down, that feeling lifts almost immediately.

What’s the clutter in your life holding you back from?

Clearing the clutter can offer you a sense of freedom and mastery.  If you’re tired of being held captive by clutter, begin taking steps to clear it.  Start anywhere!  Pick a tiny corner of a table as a means of beginning.  One step will lead to the next and you’ll begin to notice the effect this simple, but meaningful, process has on you.

Sometimes clutter exits in our minds.  It may be the ever-expanding TO DO list or the expectations of others that clouds our thinking.  See what you can do about getting all of what’s in your head down on paper.  Externalize it.  This will enable you to better determine what truly warrants your attention.  It will allow you to prioritize AND identify what’s just simply noise, taking up valuable space.

Choose to create the space you desire in your world!

Clearing the clutter is one of the 7 Spectacular Steps to Getting Unstuck!, in my free E-book.  If you’d like to know more or you’re just simply ready to FINALLY get unstuck, click here (and congrats!).

Happy De-Cluttering!

Facing Change

I find myself preparing for change.  I am taking my oldest child to college on Wednesday; this is her freshman year.  There are so many things I can worry about, but I stop myself because my worry does her no good.  The truth is my excitement for her far outweighs the trepidation I feel.  This is because I know in my heart that she is wise and wonderful and, for the most part, will make good decisions.  I know too that she will make mistakes and that she will learn much as a result of them.

This is almost like giving birth again.  When I had her, I didn’t know with any certainty that I was fully equipped or that everything would go smoothly and according to plan.  I feel the same way now.  My hopes once more for her are endless, and I cross my fingers.

These last few days I admit I’ve reached out for her hand a few times as we walked on our family beach vacation, trying to remember what it felt like when her hand wasn’t the same size as mine.  She kindly returned my grasp, if just for a few moments.

As I drop her at school, I will be forced to take a leap of faith.  This is HER chance to embrace all the possibilities the next chapter of her life has to offer.  This work that I love is so often about encouraging people to consider possibilities and sometimes challenge current ways of thinking and doing (or not-doing).  She is about to do just that.  I’m excited to see what’s in store for her and what SHE chooses as she begins to navigate these new waters.

I hope with all my heart that she makes her dreams happen along the way.

Warmly,

Laurie

Is it Selfish to Say NO?

Do you have trouble telling others NO?  A lot of us do.  It’s kind of ironic given that many of us spent our second year on earth uttering that very word rather emphatically and on a regular basis.  So what happened?  At what point did we begin to believe, on some level, that we need to say YES to too many things that are asked of us by others?  Did we say YES so we would be liked?  Did we do it because of the fear of what might happen if we actually said that tiny 2-letter word that hesitates on the tips of our tongues?

When we say YES all the time to others, chances are we end up saying NO to ourselves.  Things we hoped to do on our own behalf get moved to the bottom of the list.  We end up feeling exhausted, frustrated and resentful.  Often, we’re overwhelmed.

Now imagine this scenario flipped on its head.  Delivering a clear, concise NO to a request here and there would enable you to say YES to yourself.  Are there parts of you that you’ve been neglecting?  Address the things that are important to you.  Exercise your right to choose.  By being true to yourself about what you’d like to say YES and NO to, and behaving in accordance with that, you will notice that others will value you more for whom you are and what you are about, rather than what it is you do.

People will begin to appreciate more fully the occasions when you do say YES!

Take stock – check to see that your needs, responsibilities and priorities are being met and that something is not suffering as a direct result of your service to others.  If you believe you need to start saying NO once in a while, practice a phrase out loud that works for you such as “I’m sorry but my plate is full right now,” or “I’ll contact you when my calendar clears” or “Because I have several projects going right now, I won’t be able to give you my full attention…”  Find the phrase that works for you and feels right.

Saying NO isn’t easy, but it might be easier if you remind yourself of the flipside, what you’re saying YES to (time and energy for ______).

So, what do YOU think, is it selfish to say NO?  Feel free to share your thoughts..

Warmly, Laurie

An Important Change in Perception

So here’s what I’ve been up to lately:  flexing my “patience” muscle.  Ask anyone in my immediate family and they’ll tell you that patience (in my personal life) has never been one of my greatest strengths.  So I’ve decided to devote this summer, and forever after, to getting my patience muscle in tip top shape.

What this means is that I am actively and consciously training myself to breathe through the discomfort of not having things happen precisely when I want them to, and actually appreciating the time it takes for things that matter to germinate and really take root.  Just thinking about things in this way allows me to take my foot off the gas so I can enjoy the ride in a more meaningful way.  I know that I will be even more grateful in the long run for those things that take a little longer to happen.

Part of my “training” includes making more room in my head, heart and life for the things I long for.  I need to make sure I haven’t left any obstacles in the way and I’m ready to receive all that is attached to what I want.

The other part of my training involves using the waiting time to effectively address other priorities in my life.  There are always other things I can turn my attention to, with equally great rewards, while I’m waiting for something in another arena to take shape.  This doesn’t mean I’ve abandoned my original aim.  I will “water it” every day but I won’t obsess.  I will find other important options to fill my time so I am happy and fulfilled until my primary plan/goal/desire is ready to emerge.

So, for me, waiting isn’t just waiting any longer.  I’m building my power in patience.

I’ve made a change in how I perceive waiting and it’s really reframed the experience for me.  How have you recently made a change that has made a positive impact in your life?

Warmly, Laurie

Sometimes We Need a Nudge

Before..

I was pulling out of my driveway one day not too long ago and I spotted something unusual near the curb.  I got out of my car to get a closer look and saw that it was a turtle lying on its back.  I wasn’t sure whether or not to disturb the little guy.  Then I surmised that it must have been  attempting to climb up the curb when it fell backward onto its shell.  I gave it a soft roll onto its front and watched it slowly makes its way again.  Poor thing just needed a gentle nudge.

Sometimes I too just need a little nudge.  The key is finding the right kind of nudge.  I don’t particularly like being told what to do and I don’t like it when others feel the need to take over.  However, talking with someone I trust, someone who has my back and is willing to help me uncover my own strengths and sources of motivation is what makes all the difference in the world to me.  That’s what has helped me move in the right direction and with renewed enthusiasm as well!  That’s what has enabled me to tap into my own truths.

Sometimes the hardest part is asking for help.  Now granted, the turtle on its back was clearly not able to do this – but YOU can!  Are you at a point in your life where you might need a little nudge to shift over to what you really want to be doing?  You know there’s something that could be different in a great yet perhaps intimidating way, and you’re just not sure how to take the next step.

After…and on his way.

I can help if you’re ready.  Need a little nudge?

Make it happen!

Substitutes won’t Suffice

Ever wander around the kitchen knowing there was something yummy to be had, but trying to avoid it?  For example, I might really want one of those chocolate chip cookies I baked for the kids (Ha! Really? For the kids?), but I might eat other things instead because I presume them to be “better” for me.  So I have a piece of fruit, a piece of cheese, a couple of pretzels, a handful of nuts, and I keep going like this!  The reason I do is because I’m clearly just not satisfied.  All I ever wanted was the cookie.  These other little snacks, adding up their calories along the way, never quite do the job of appeasing my sweet tooth.  And of course, I’m sure you all know, I end up eating the cookie in the end.

So I ask, why go the circuitous route?  Why not just go for that which you seek and save yourself the time and struggle of avoiding what you really love, exactly what will truly “fill you up.”  Substitutes just won’t suffice!

Warmly,  Laurie
